How Collegiate NFL Impact ranks colleges by NFL production

Data source

Player statistics are compiled from NFL game box scores. Rankings include every regular-season NFL game; playoff games are not included.

Season coverage

The public site covers the 2010 through 2026 NFL seasons. The current season updates as games are completed; completed seasons show full regular-season totals.

College attribution

Each player who records stats is credited to one college: the school whose football team he played for. Production is not credited for a school a player only attended for another sport.

When a player transferred, his NFL production is credited to the college he played football for, not to every school on his academic record. Players who cannot be linked to a football program are omitted from college rankings.

How rankings work

Box-score lines are scored with a fantasy-point system, then summed by college (and by conference when you open the conference view). Fantasy Points rankings order colleges by total fantasy points across every category below.

Each named stat view still shows fantasy points in the table, but ranks by the headline counting stat readers usually care about:

  • Passing, rushing, receiving — yards (passing also scores touchdowns and interceptions; receiving includes half-point receptions)
  • Defense — total tackles (every player's defensive and interception stats count, plus fumble recoveries by players who did not fumble that game)
  • Kicking — field goals made
  • Punting — gross punt average
  • Returning — kick return yards (punt returns are included in the view)
  • Scoring — points from touchdowns, field goals, and extra points across categories

Full point values for each category are listed on the About page.

Positions

When you filter by position, a player counts at the position his team listed him at for that NFL season, taken from season roster data. The same player can appear at different positions in different years when his listing changes.

Update schedule

During the NFL season, statistics are refreshed weekly after each slate of games—typically early in the week—so current-season pages stay current through the latest completed week.

Older seasons

NFL box scores did not always track every stat we score. Quarterback hits appear from 2011 on, and tackles for loss from 2014 on. Before those years, players earned no points for those plays because the stats were not recorded. That mainly affects defense totals for 2010–2013.
